The ALM bulletin is a bimonthly newsletter from Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM).
ALM is an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults.

ALM bulletin: May 2019

I am very pleased to inform you that we have just published electronically (http://www.alm-online.net/alm-publications/) the Proceedings for ALM 24 held in 2017 in Rotterdam, The Netherlands and ALM 25 held in 2018 in London, UK. The Proceedings for ALM 24 are the final version, which includes the peer reviewed articles that have previously been published in the ALM International Journal (ALMIJ). We will be making contact with members who wish to receive a printed copy of these Proceedings. The ALM 25 Proceedings are still a draft version and are awaiting the peer reviewed articles. We hope you will find these publications useful in your research and practice in adult mathematics education.

As I explained more fully in the previous Bulletin, the next Proceedings (for ALM 26) will no longer be linked to reviewed articles published in the ALMIJ. We will obviously still welcome the submission of articles for review arising from conference presentations, but these will not be published in a special issue. This arrangement should provide authors with greater flexibility as to when they submit to the ALMIJ and greater independence for the local editors of the conference Proceedings.

I also urge you to make whatever final decisions or arrangements are necessary to attend the 26th ALM Conference to be held in Lund, Sweden in July. You will find further details and contact links in this Bulletin.

ALM26 - Maths in a Digital Age

On behalf of the ALM 26 organising committee, it is my pleasure to warmly invite researchers, teachers, research students, school leaders, and academics from all over the world to attend the 26th International Conference in Adults Learning Mathematics from July 9-12, 2019 Lund, Sweden. ALM conferences share insight into recent research about adults learning mathematics, as well as practitioners´ experiences from teaching maths or numeracy to adults. ALM´s goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners from all over the world to present, exchange and discuss adult mathematics and numeracy education.

This conference about maths in a digital age is particularly timely in view of the ongoing digitalisation in society and education. The conference will provide opportunities to discuss different perspectives on how mathematics education fits into the digital age, highlighting issues about adult maths and numeracy education in a changing society. The ALM 26 program includes keynote speeches, invited talks, poster sessions and presentations of papers and workshops in parallel sessions. Most importantly there will be plenty of space to discuss relevant issues concerning your own research and teaching in the digital age with those who have similar interests.

Jorgensen, M. (2019). Teaching the identification of numerical deception in political claims. MathAMATYC Educator. Winter 2019, Volume 10, Number 2.

This article describes the development of a framework to help teach students how to identify numerical deception in political claims. Seven categories of numerical deception emerged from a review of deceptive political claims analyzed by FactCheck.org and PolitiFact.com. The categories are: cherry-picking, excessive rounding, speculating, ignoring perspective, using imprecise terms, manipulating denominators and presuming causation. Each category is described, and an example is shown, as well as cues that may alert someone to a potential deception. Practical ideas are then described about how to use the framework for teaching, based on four semesters of incorporating it into a general education, math-for-liberal-arts course. This includes principles adopted, assignments, assessments and lessons learned.

Adults use mathematics extensively in work, even though they may deny it or dismiss their numerate behaviour as common sense. Their capacity for mathematics is invisible to them and confirms their ‘non-maths person’ self-perception, which has negative consequences for their life choices. In Adults, Mathematics and Work, the authors tackle and explain a number of paradoxes related to the curious relationship between adults and mathematics. The book operationalises the benefits of workplace doctoral research by providing a set of the tools to review this mistaken self-perception in order to make workers’ abilities available for development. It also provides a systematic way of uncovering and recognising informal and non-formal learning to support employability and re-employability in an increasingly fluid work-landscape.
