The ALM bulletin is a bimonthly newsletter from Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM).
ALM is an international research forum bringing together researchers and practitioners in adult mathematics/numeracy teaching and learning in order to promote the learning of mathematics by adults.

ALM Annual General Meeting

The annual international conference ALM25 (see below) provides the opportunity for ALM to hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM), when members can meet the Officers and Trustees of the organisation. All members are entitled to attend, raise concerns, make suggestions and be nominated for positions. The AGM elects the Officers and Trustees to serve for the next 12 months. The papers for the AGM are available on the ALM-website.
The twenty-fifth AGM will be held on Wednesday 11th July 2018 at 17:00 in UCL Institute of Education, London, UK.

In addition to the academic activities, we also have arranged a visit to the British Museum (free and very close to the conference venue) on Monday 9th July at 3 pm, and a visit to the magnificent Kew Gardens (for a small entrance fee and a travel card) on Thursday 12th July 2-5 pm.

From the abstrract: In recent decades, technology has inuenced various aspects of assessment in mathematics education: (1) supporting the assessment of higher-order thinking skills in mathematics, (2) representing authentic problems from the world around us to use and apply mathematical knowledge and skills, and (3) making the delivery of tests and the analysis of results through psychometric analysis more sophisticated. We argue that these developments are not pushing mathematics education in the same direction, however, which creates tensions. Mathematics education is at risk of focusing too much on assessment of lower order goals, such as the reproduction of procedural, calculation based, knowledge and skills. ==> read more

This paper examines and compares how the national media of Japan, England and France reported on the PIAAC results of their countries and the extent to which these reports mirror key messages from the OECD’s Country Notes. It begins to trace how the OECD PIAAC agendas materialise into national policies.”

Adult Mathematics Education at CERME11

Call for papers is now open

Submissions of 8 page papers or 2 page poster proposals due at 15th September 2018
The 11th conference on European Research in Mathematics Education will be held 5 - 11 February 2019 in Utrecht, The Netherlands. In this conference the thematic working group TWG07 is scheduled on Adult Mathematics Education.
The topics to be addressed in this TWG will include, mathematics for the reflective citizen (e.g., mathematical literacy), mathematics in and for work (e.g., technological literacies), mathematics and societal effects (e.g., critical mathematics, PIAAC research), teaching and learning mathematics with adult learners (curriculum, pedagogies, didactics) and good practices in adult mathematics education and lifelong learning. Therefore, this working group welcomes research papers on adults learning mathematics as seen from various international and theoretical perspectives using a variety of methodological frameworks in diverse contexts.

PIAAC 2nd cycle

The second cycle of PIAAC is starting up, again with an extensive survey of the literacy, numeracy and problem solving skills of adults aged 16 to 65. The first plans will be revealed in the forthcoming months and ALM members will be influential in the realisation of a modern 21st century numeracy assessment. At ALM25 we will encourage you to contribute your views on how to assess 21st century numeracy skills in adults. ==> read more
